NCSR DEMOKRITOS allies with key players in Europe to develop the first ultra-low power ferroelectric neuromorphic processor for artificial intelligence applications. Headed by A. Dimoulas, the Epitaxy and Surface Science Laboratory (ESSL), part of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, will participate in the effort. ESSL will use molecular beam epitaxy to develop bio-inspired electronic synapses based on ferroelectric tunnel junction memristors. The devices will be integrated with CMOS to produce the synaptic cores of the neuromorphic processor. The effort is funded by the EU H2020 program under project BeFerroSynaptic, contract No 871737 (http://www.beferrosynaptic.eu/ )
