The Institute of Biosciences and Applications (IBA) of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” conducts high-level basic and applied research across the life sciences, while actively promoting the transformation of scientific knowledge into innovative applications with societal and technological impact. As one of Greece’s leading research Institutes in biosciences, IBA advances interdisciplinary research connecting fundamental science with biotechnology, biomedicine and emerging technologies.

The Institute’s research activities focus on: i) the regulation of cellular function and the molecular mechanisms underlying physiological and pathological processes, with particular emphasis on ageing and age-related diseases, ii) biotechnology, environmental biology and bioinnovation, and iii) structural, molecular and computational biology, bioinformatics and related interdisciplinary fields.

IBA places strong emphasis on scientific excellence, innovation and knowledge production, supporting the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, bioactive compounds and advanced technologies for applications in health, biotechnology, agro-nutrition and environmental sustainability. At the same time, the Institute contributes to the education and training of young scientists, the dissemination of scientific knowledge and public engagement with science, while providing specialized research infrastructures, technological services and know-how transfer to public and private sector organizations through national and European collaborations.
