Vassilis Kilikoglou

Dr. Vassilis Kilikoglou, Director of Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology NCSR Demokritos, holds a degree on Chemistry, University of Athens and a PhD in Ceramics Provenance and Technology from the Chemistry Department, University of Ioannina. He has been a research fellow at the Smithsonian Institution (1985-1986) and has taught at the Conservation School, TEU Athens (1993-2010). Since 1989 he has been working as a researcher at the Institute of Materials Science, which later became part of INN. His research interests include the study provenance and technology of archaeological materials with emphasis on pottery, study of mechanical and thermal properties of ceramics and more specifically the effect of temper and microstructure on the mechanical and thermal performance of ceramics. Furthermore, the study of mechanisms of deterioration and preservation of archaeological and historic building materials as well as development of nanocomposites for the enhancement of the performance of existing building materials, are part of his research. He has been scientist-in-charge in a number of European and nationally funded projects.
