Patras Science Center: a source of scientific thinking for all ages
An interesting lecture by Prof. Spyros Pnevmatikos at the NCSR “Demokritos”

On Friday, March 15th 2012, Prof. Spyros Pnevmatikos, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Patras, gave a lecture at the NCSR “Demokritos” in which he presented the activities of the “Patras Science Center”, a center that uses interactive methods to communicate the basic concepts of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics.

In his lecture, Prof. Pnevmatikos explained that if scientists themselves do not approach the general public and explain the subject of their research activity, they are the one responsible for leaving the general public uniformed. This idea gave birth to the Patras Science Center, an educational center that does not refer to a museum. Instead, this center is an interactive exhibition where the visitors are not taught knowledge but explore it. In his lecture, Prof. Pnevmatikos used the example of the Center’s permanent computer science exhibition to explain their activities. In this exhibition, interesting and interactive exhibits, such as games and logical thought games, presented by specialized personnel, are used to explain different science concepts to the visitors. The Science Center’s goal is to trigger the visitors’ scientific thought and reveal the logic behind each scientific theory.

Prof. Pnevmatikos, along with his colleague at the Center, Prof. Dionisis Vavougios, Associate Professor of Physics and Instruction at the University of Thessaly, spoke about the Center’s activities and its history. More specifically, the first Greek Science Center, the “National Science Center”, was founded in 1996 in Athens and, later on, were founded the Science Centers of Halkida and Patras. Finally, Prof. Pnevmatikos and Prof. Vavougios discussed with researchers from the NCSR “D” regarding the prospect of integrating these kind of initiatives in the educational activities of “Demokritos”.
