“Scalable Self-Scheduling Schemes for Large Clusters”
An interesting lecture by Prof. Anthony T. Chronopoulos at the NCSR “Demokritos”

On Wednesday, December 19th 2012, Prof. Anthony Chronopoulos, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA, visited the NCSR “Demokritos” and gave a lecture under the title: “Scalable Self-Scheduling Schemes for Large Clusters”.

As part of the lecture series “Research, Innovation and Development”, organized by the NCSR “Demokritos”, Prof. Chronopoulos, spoke about computer clusters, a group of connected computers, all performing a similar function, that allow to build high performance systems (also known as parallel computing). Moreover, he presented his team’s research on parallel algorithms for large sparse problems and scheduling schemes for effective load balancing.

He also referred to the major revolution of cloud computing, through which resources are retrieved from the Internet. This innovative approach offers optimal and cost-efficient usage of computing power provided as a service through distant and, in some cases, virtual computers.

Prof. Chronopoulos, an expert in the areas of Distributed and Parallel Computing, High Performance Computing, Computional Science and Engineering, has been awarded 15 research grants and his work is cited in over 1.000 non- co-authors' research articles.

The distinguished Greek Professor of Computer Science, on Friday, December 21st, revisited the NCSR “Demokritos” in order to meet with the Center’s researchers and discuss the prospect of scientific and research collaboration with his lab at the University of Texas.
