Building a smarter world”
The internationally acclaimed Professor and Researcher Joseph Sifakis
gave a lecture at the NCSR “Demokritos”

On Tuesday, October 16th, the distinguished scientist Joseph Sifakis visited the NCSR “Demokritos” and gave a lecture under the title “From Programs to Systems – Building a smarter World”. Mr. Sifakis, the first Greek recipient of the Turing Award, considered the Nobel Prize for computer science, is a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research, CNRS, and founder of Verimag laboratory in Grenoble.

Verimag is a leading research laboratory in the area of critical embedded systems. It developed the underlying theory and technology for the SCADE tool, used by Airbus for the design and validation of its critical real-time systems, and is becoming a de facto standard for aeronautics.

Mr. Sifakis shared his valuable scientific knowledge and experience from the field of computer science with “Demokritos” scientific community and inspired the Center’s younger researchers. “Computer science’s center of gravity is shifting from programming to systems,” he characteristically said early in his speech.

Mr. Sifakis analyzed the value of having theories and rules that could be used in order to build critical systems. Furthermore, he mentioned that the next day in computer science will be characterized by cost-efficient critical systems and services made up of different online cooperating embedded systems. “The computer world allows for improvement”, he said at the end of his lecture.

Mr. Sifakis allowed plenty of time for questions and exchanged interesting views with young computer science researchers and attendees from other scientific fields.
