“How to turn an idea into a product”

The distinguished business strategy consultant Mr. Kostas Mallios shared his knowledge and experience on exploiting and managing intellectual property with NCSR “Demokritos” researchers


On Monday, September 24th, the distinguished business strategy consultant of Greek origin, Mr. Kostas Mallios, visited the NCSR “Demokritos” and gave a lecture under the title “Ideas have value – the real world pitfalls of not protecting your IP”. After spending 15 years at Microsoft Corporation in a variety of executive roles, most recently as General Manager of Strategy and Business Development, the last year and a half, Mr. Mallios, is Vice President at Intellectual Ventures, the world’s largest buyer of individual patents.

Mr. Mallios shared his valuable business experience with “Demokritos” scientific community and opened up new prospects of strategic thinking and action, both in national and international level. In his concise lecture, he analyzed the value of exploiting research results through establishing licenses and patents and gave hands-on instructions to young researchers about the steps that they can follow in order for them to turn their ideas into innovative products. “Business is a result of managing risks” he said, and added that young people’s behavior is by definition characterized by risk taking actions. Mr. Mallios allowed plenty of time for questions and exchanged interesting views with the audience.
