We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced, and talented Post Doctoral Scholar to complement our team in the Development of advanced oxidation processes for water detoxification contaminated with cyanotoxins. This project is related to the Research Program “Cyanotoxins in fresh water. Advances in analysis, occurrence and treatment – CYANOWATER” financed by the Greek Ministry of Education and the European Commission under the action “APIΣTEIA”.

CYANOWATER draws on advanced analytical chemistry and nanotechnology-driven molecular science, involving advanced functional materials in order to fill current research gaps in the areas of cyanotoxin analysis in environmental samples and advanced methods of water treatment for cyanotoxins removal. The strong ties and close collaboration of the CYANOWATER research team with leading research partners in the field and water supply enterprises will permit technology transfer and achievement of significant breakthrough research results in all aspects of cyanotoxins management i.e. advanced methods for detection and monitoring as well as development and assessment of advanced methods of cyanotoxins degradation for the detoxification of water.

Description of the project
This eighteen-month project will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of a series of novel hybrid nanostructured TiO2-POM materials (where POM: Polyoxometalates) and the evaluation of their effectiveness for the destruction of selected cyanotoxins. The successful candidate will also have to supervise, guide, and train a PhD student that will be hired in order to work in the same project. The successful candidate will be employed for eighteen months.

Possible starting date: January 1st 2013

Candidates must hold a Bachelors/Diploma and PhD degree in Chemistry / Chemical Engineering. Research experience in advanced analytical methods for trace organic pollutant analysis, nanoparticles synthesis and characterization, photocatalysis, colloidal chemistry, as well as in the field of advanced oxidation processes is essential. The candidates also have to have experience in successfully training PhD and Masters students in the above fields, excellent communication skills (extensive experience in papers and research proposals writing as well as presentations in international conferences), and excellent command of the English language (fluently speaking and writing).
