MNBS 2012: 6th Annual Workshop on Micro-Nano-Bio Systems
An initiative of the MNBS EU Funded cluster of projects
NCSR “Demokritos” Congress Center
3 & 4 May 2012

Micro-Nano-Bio Convergence Systems is a major domain within the field of Microsystems & Smart Systems Integration, which is being supported by the European Commission under the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) priority. The EU-funded projects in this domain focus on advanced systems by developing and integrating converging micro-nano-bio and information & communication technologies. The MNBS cluster includes projects for “in-vitro” testing and for “in-vivo” interaction with the human body as well as analytical systems for environment and food applications.

This year’s meeting, the 6th in the row, was hosted at the Congress Center of NCSR “Demokritos” on May 3rd and 4th 2012. The focus this year was in “Landing in the real work: creating a supply chain”.

During these two days the participants had the opportunity to obtain an overview of the progresses done by projects funded by the European Commission. Moreover they interacted directly with the most successful projects of this program in the “COWIN market place”. Additionally, the latest status of Work program 2013 and Horizon 2020 were presented. Finally, the participants had the opportunity to express their opinion about where the field of MNBS is heading and how it should be supported by the European Commission.

This year’s focus was on understanding the supply chain of different type of applications and the needs of the owner of each element of that supply chain from the point of view of research, technological development and innovation. In particular the following issues were addressed:

- To encourage the diffusion and exchange of information on the development of science and technology.

- To identify synergies and possible collaborations to tackle critical issues covering the full value chain from R&D to exploitation.

- To reach common understanding the steps in the supply chain for different type of applications, and the needs and problems in the area of research and innovation of the stake holders of the elements of the supply chain.

The meeting was organized by the European Union and NCSR “Demokritos”. For more information please, visit the web-site: or contact the organizers Dr. Ioannis Raptis ( or Dr. Panagiota Petrou (
