On Wednesday, February 9th, an Agreement for Targeted Research between the “DEMOKRITOS” National Center of Scientific Research (NCSR “DEMOKRITOS) and the company NOBEL XILINAKIS D. & Co  active in the branch of solar energy utilization was officially presented. The agreement specifies Research & Development (R & D) activities to be conducted by NCSR “Demokritos” researchers on behalf of the company, related to the energetic optimization and full characterization of the company products (solar thermal collectors, solar domestic hot water systems, thermal storage devices). The scope of the agreement encompasses also the development of new, innovative products by taking advantage of the most recent developments in the field of solar thermal energy utilization technologies.


In the event, which was attended with great interest by an audience of hundreds of people and was moderated by the Head of the Solar & other Energy Systems Laboratory (SESL) Dr. V. Belessiotis, short addresses were delivered by the General Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Prof. A Andreopoulos, the Vice-President of the Greek Solar Industry Association Mr. P. Konstantinidis, by Mr Siamidis on behalf of the President of the Athens Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ACCI) and by the Director of the Institute of Nuclear Technology and Radiation Protection (INTR-P) in which SESL belongs, Dr. J. Papazoglou.

In a speech by the Vice President of NCSR “DEMOKRITOS” Dr. K. Spyropoulos it was pointed out that applied-targeted research constitutes a strategic choice and an eternal element of the overall policy of the research center, considering the cooperation with the productive sector as an essential parameter in the course of development of a country. In the area of technologies for the utilization of environment-friendly forms of energy in particular, NCSR “DEMOKRITOS” has already confirmed its will to broaden and strengthen its R&D activities, in the framework of the overall discussion on Sustainable Development.

The Managing Director of NOBEL XILINAKIS D. & Co Mr. D Xylinakis stressed, on his part, that the company, by signing this agreement, expresses its strong will for investing on targeted research, a practice which, in fact, it has been following for many years now through its dynamic R&D department, aiming at the continuous improvement of the efficiency and the quality of its products, as well as the development of new innovative products.  Furthermore, he underlined the strong conviction of the company that investing on innovation, as well as taking advantage of scientific know-how through the cooperation with the scientific manpower of the country, is not a luxury but an imperative choice for growth, also strengthening the extroversion of the company, particularly in times of a general economic slump like the present ones.

In the closing speech, Dr. E. Papanicolaou, a Researcher with NCSR “Demokritos” and Scientific Responsible of the present Targeted Research Project, presented the scope of the agreement, outlining the specific activities foreseen for implementation within the project and pointing out that these are a constituent part of the overall R&D activities of SESL, which has undertaken the implementation of the agreement.

The event was concluded with an exchange of symbolic gifts between the representatives of the two agreement partners, Dr. K. Spyropoulos and Mr. D. Xylinakis.
